Dubai Mall is one of the largest shopping malls in the world, located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It is part of the Burj Khalifa complex, which also includes the iconic Burj Khalifa skyscraper. Here is a brief history of Dubai Mall:
- Planning and construction: The idea for Dubai Mall was first conceived in the early 2000s, as part of Dubai's ambitious plans to become a global hub for tourism, commerce, and entertainment. The project was overseen by Emaar Properties, one of the largest real estate developers in the Middle East. Construction began in 2004 and took about four years to complete.
- Grand opening: Dubai Mall officially opened its doors on November 4, 2008, with a lavish ceremony that included a fireworks display, live performances, and a fashion show featuring top models. The mall was launched with around 600 retailers, including high-end fashion brands, luxury jewelry stores, electronics outlets, and supermarkets.
- Expansion: Over the years, Dubai Mall has undergone several expansions to accommodate the growing demand from shoppers and tourists. In 2015, the mall added a new wing called Fashion Avenue, which houses some of the world's most prestigious fashion labels, including Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton. In 2018, the mall announced plans for another major expansion, which would include a new hotel, residential apartments, and more retail and dining options.
- Features and attractions: Dubai Mall is not just a shopping destination; it is also a major tourist attraction in its own right. The mall features a range of entertainment options, including an indoor theme park called Sega Republic, an aquarium and underwater zoo, an ice skating rink, a multiplex cinema, and a virtual reality park. There is also an outdoor promenade overlooking the Dubai Fountain, which is one of the largest choreographed fountain systems in the world.
- Records and accolades: Dubai Mall has set several world records since its opening. It is currently the largest mall in the world by total area, with over 1,200 stores and a total floor space of 5.9 million square feet. It also holds the record for the world's largest acrylic panel in its aquarium, as well as the world's largest indoor snow park. The mall has won numerous awards for its design, architecture, and sustainability, including the prestigious LEED Gold certification for environmental performance.
