Maharana Pratap's fort, also known as the Kumbhalgarh Fort, is a Mewar fortress located in the Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, India. The fort was built during the 15th century by Maharana Kumbha, and it served as a strategic military outpost for the rulers of Mewar. It was later expanded by Maharana Pratap, who made it his capital.
Maharana Pratap was a 16th century Rajput ruler of the Mewar region who is known for his valiant efforts to resist the Mughal Empire's attempts to conquer his kingdom. During his reign, he faced several battles with the Mughals and the neighboring states, and he used Kumbhalgarh Fort as his base of operations.
The fort is situated on a hilltop at an elevation of 1,914 meters above sea level and is surrounded by a 36-kilometer-long wall, which is the second-longest wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. The wall has seven fortified gateways and is wide enough to allow eight horses to walk abreast. It is said that the wall was constructed using a special mortar made of sand, lime, and the milk of a local plant called akra.
The fort has several palaces, temples, and gardens, including the Badal Mahal, the Kumbha Palace, and the Jain Temple. The Badal Mahal, or the Palace of Clouds, is the highest point in the fort and offers a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding hills and valleys. The Kumbha Palace was the residence of Maharana Kumbha and is known for its exquisite architecture and intricate carvings.
The fort also has several water tanks and reservoirs that were built to provide water to the residents and the soldiers. The most famous of these is the Badshahi Kund, which is a stepped tank that was built by Rana Fateh Singh in the 18th century. The tank is surrounded by several chhatris, or umbrella-shaped pavilions, and is a popular spot for tourists.
Today, the Kumbhalgarh Fort is a popular tourist destination and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is known for its historical significance, architectural grandeur, and stunning natural beauty. The fort is also a symbol of the Rajput pride and the indomitable spirit of Maharana Pratap, who is remembered as one of the greatest warriors in Indian history.
