Agra Fort is a historical fort located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It was built in the 16th century by the Mughal Emperor Akbar and was later expanded by his grandson Shah Jahan. The fort served as the primary residence of the Mughal Emperors until 1638 when the capital was shifted to Delhi.
The Agra Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The fort covers an area of approximately 94 acres and is made of red sandstone. It has several buildings and structures within its premises, including palaces, mosques, and gardens.
Some of the notable structures within the Agra Fort are:
Diwan-i-Am: This is a public audience hall where the Emperor would meet his subjects and listen to their grievances.
Diwan-i-Khas: This is a private audience hall where the Emperor would meet important officials and discuss state affairs.
Jahangiri Mahal: This palace was built by Akbar for his son Jahangir and is an excellent example of Mughal architecture.
Khas Mahal: This is a private palace that was used by the Emperor and his family. It has beautiful carvings and decorations.
Sheesh Mahal: This palace is also known as the Palace of Mirrors and has walls and ceilings decorated with thousands of tiny mirrors.
Moti Masjid: This is a small mosque built by Shah Jahan for his private use.
Musamman Burj: This is a two-story octagonal tower where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb. It has a beautiful marble balcony from where the Emperor could view the Taj Mahal.
Apart from these structures, the Agra Fort also has several beautiful gardens, including the Anguri Bagh and the Khas Mahal garden.
Visitors can enter the fort through the Amar Singh Gate and purchase tickets at the entrance. The fort is open from sunrise to sunset, and it is recommended to allocate at least 2-3 hours to explore the entire complex.
